General Meet Info

There are two main meets each week: Saturday A meets (scored NVSL dual meets) and Monday B meets (unscored and not NVSL‑sanctioned, so times don’t count toward NVSL records). Additional special meets also occur throughout the season.

Meets run rain or shine, with delays only for lightning.

Swimmers compete by gender and age groups: 8 & under, 9–10, 11–12, 13–14, and 15–18, with a possible 6 & under group on Monday nights. Age is determined as of June 1

Competitive strokes include freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, plus freestyle and medley relays. IM events occur at selected meets. Distances: 25m for 8 & under; 50m for 9+ (except 9–10 butterfly is 25m).

Swimmers must know their events, stay in the team area, and notify coaches before leaving—especially at A meets.

NVSL attire rules: only team or plain suits; only plain or team caps; goggles recommended (bring a spare).

Saturday A meets (scored NVSL dual meets)

“A” Meets are competitive, scored NVSL dual meets held on Saturday mornings. Each team swims against every team in its division once—five meets total—determining the Division Champion.

Swimmers are selected based on their season times, age group, gender, and overall meet strategy. Each swimmer may compete in up to two individual events and two relays. Final selections are made by the Head Coach and announced by Thursday evening; swimmers learn their specific events at Friday practice. Families must declare availability as early as possible.

Meets begin at 9:00 AM, with warm‑ups typically at 8:15–8:30 (home) and 8:30–8:45 (away); coaches will confirm exact times.

Each team fields three swimmers per age/gender in the four strokes (free, back, breast, fly) plus relay teams, including a mixed‑age relay. Not all swimmers race every Saturday.

Event order: Freestyle → Backstroke → Breaststroke → Butterfly → Relays.

Lane assignments: home team in lanes 1, 3, 5; visiting team in 2, 4, 6.
Swimmers are seeded by fastest times.

Monday B meets (Woodson B-League)

Truro competes in the Woodson B‑League (Rutherford, Fairfax, Canterbury Woods, Ilda, Long Branch). B Meets are held on Monday evenings and give all swimmers the chance to race local NVSL teams. Most seasons include 3–4 meets plus an IM Carnival

B Meets follow the same individual events as A Meets but instead of relays include an optional 100m Individual Medley. Any swimmer may enter events, with multiple heats, except swimmers who placed 1st–3rd in that event at the most recent A Meet

These meets help swimmers try new strokes, improve times, and work toward A‑meet opportunities. Start & Warm‑ups:

  • Meets start at 6:00 PM
  • Home warm‑ups: 5:00 PM
  • Away warm‑ups: 5:30 PM

Key Rules

6 & Under:

  • Cannot swim both 6&U and 8&U in the same stroke.
  • Short‑course (10m) free/back offered for Mini Swordfish.

Eligibility:

  • Swimmers may swim events they did not place 1st–3rd in the previous A Meet.

Entries:

  • Up to two events plus IM per meet.

Ribbons:

  • Top six times across all heats receive ribbons; ties receive duplicate awards.

Additional Meets

In addition to the regular A and B meets, there are other meets throughout the swim season.

Time Trials

Held the Saturday before the first A meet, Time Trials give every swimmer a timed swim in each stroke. Coaches use these times to set the first A‑meet lineup, and officials use the meet to prepare for the season. Only Truro swimmers participate, and there are no relays. Attendance is strongly encouraged; if absent, swimmers should declare on SwimTopia and may be timed at practice if possible.

Divisional Relays

Mid‑season, all six division teams compete in relay‑only events. Each team enters one relay per age group and gender, plus mixed‑age relays. Lineups are based on fastest times and team needs. Declaring availability is essential—a missing swimmer scratches the entire relay.

IM Carnival

Teams in the B‑Meet League compete in the Individual Medley (100m: fly, back, breast, free). IM times can qualify swimmers for Divisionals. Swimmers must be legal in all four strokes to participate.

Divisionals
Held the last Saturday in July, Divisionals feature each team’s two fastest swimmers per event (including IM). Swimmers may compete in up to two events. Time Trials and in‑season performances determine entries, with coaches using discretion as needed.

All‑Stars

The week after Divisionals, the NVSL hosts All‑Stars, featuring the 18 fastest times from across the league in each event. About 600 swimmers compete—qualifying is a major accomplishment.
